  • A pause in rains in June-July has delayed the definitive start of the 2010 rainy season in the pastoral and agro-pastoral areas of the northeast. The regeneration of pastures will be delayed, and the lean season will be prolonged until in mid-August for poor and very poor households in the area.
  • Interventions from government and its partners (general food distributions, subsidized cereal sales by the OPAM, the supply of animal feed, nutritional support, rehabilitation of water points, etc.) will continue to mitigate food insecurity in pastoral and agro-pastoral regions of Gao and Kidal.
  • The month of Ramadan with its strong demand for millet will be observed this year in late August to September during the agricultural lean season, which has already begun in agricultural areas of the country. However, the lean season will likely be less difficult this year because of the large cereal deficits at the household, community cereal banks, and trader levels. The grain markets are well supplied and prices are stable or rising slightly.
